As part of the research approach of the INTERSMARTS project, a systematic search and evaluation of scientific literature was conducted, focusing on studies related to sustainable tourism development within the geographical scope of Greece.
The literature review centered around four key thematic axes that have emerged as critical for the planning and implementation of effective tourism policies:
- Overtourism
- Pollution and environmental degradation
- Innovation in tourism
- Seasonality
The objective of the review was to map the existing body of scientific knowledge produced in Greece, offering an additional tool for understanding local and regional challenges, as well as identifying opportunities for intervention based on contemporary and evidence-based approaches.
This activity reinforced the interdisciplinary nature of the INTERSMARTS project, creating a foundation for linking theoretical knowledge with applied practices. Moreover, it highlights the significance of scientific research in informing strategy and shaping policies that aim toward a balanced, innovative, and environmentally responsible tourism model.
The documented insights derived from the study of Greek academic literature represent a valuable complementary resource for INTERSMARTS and further strengthen the project’s goal of promoting a sustainable, realistic, and socially acceptable tourism transition.
